Brahmi – Bacopa monnieri
Brahmi is a succulent-like plant with thick leaves and beautiful white flowers. It is native to swampy areas in India, Australia, Mexico, Africa and China; it is also to be found in humid tropical to subtropical climates.
Bacopa Monnieri is blessed with a variety of names around the world, such as: water hyssop, thyme-leafed gratiola, “Herb of grace”, and Brahmi. Brahmi is a Hindu word; Brahma is the god of creation and Brahmins represent the highest Indian caste. It has always been the duty of Brahmins to become scholars or priests to educate Indian society. According to ancient Indian lore, Brahmins used this herb to aid memorising long texts for reciting and teaching.
Bacopa contains the bitter substances that create its authentic taste. Traditionally it is eaten in the raw state or drunk as tea. Other methods available these days are by processing into powder, extracted into oil or taken as dietary supplement.
Currently there is research into the compounds that compose Brahmi, as it is an ingredient in many nootropic preparations. It contains various Alkaloids, Phytosterines, Triterpenes and Saponins (Bacosides A and B). Science indicates that Bacosides are responsible for the transmission of nerve impulses and faster repair of damaged nerve cells. There is hope that this plant might be useful to ease symptoms of neurodegenerative problems and with increasing mental balance. Although scientific research is ongoing, there is no official data available as yet.
