The Oak
The oak has long been a symbol of hardness and strength. The eminent scholar Hildegard von Bingen characterized the true nature of this tree with the words: The oak is hard and bitter, there is nothing soft in it. Nevertheless, the oak offers pleasant, even beneficial effects to us.
It is considered a cosmic store of wisdom – this is hidden in its immense power. The oak grows slowly but surely, and is often associated with honor, grandeur and health because of its size and longevity. With a lifespan of more than 300 years, it represents a golden symbol of life.
The valuable substances it contains are many. Precious oak wood is prized and used to this day because of its immense resistance, hardness and durability. Oak buds have always been used by humans to make tea. Their fruit, the acorns, are tannin-free and very nutritious. They contain 70% starch and sugar, 15% fatty oils and 6% protein. The acorn flour obtained from it was previously mixed with rye to bake bread. Even today, acorn coffee is popular.
Oak roots extract minerals from the soil, such as calcium, potassium and gold, which contribute to the extraordinary properties of the tree and actively protect the buds.
This is probably why Pastor Kneipp, one of the forefathers of naturopathy, recommended the regular consumption of oak buds for strengthening, especially for children and the elderly. Today they mainly serve to harmonize body, mind and soul.
