Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica)
Gotu Kola has been used in Ayurvedic traditions for more than 5000 years.
Centella asiatica is a delicate, herbaceous plant that flowers all year long in the tropical areas of Africa, Asia, Australia, and Pacific Ocean islands. Although Gotu Kola is often called Brahmi, this herb is distinct from the Bacopa monnieri Brahmi. Gotu Kola is known in other countries by these names: Kodavan, Indian pennywort and Asiatic pennywort.
Within Indian culture Gotu Kola has been traditionally used to heighten a state of meditation. In cuisine, the leaves have a pleasant spicy taste and are a valued flavour in curry.
Active ingredients found in Gotu Kola include: vitamins (A, B, C and E), iron, calcium, selenium, magnesium, the amino acid l-arginine, polyphenoles, flavonoids and triterpenes.
